INTRODUCTION

Pediatric dentistry is a rapidly growing specialty in Pakistan, focused on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence, including those with special healthcare needs. Pediatric dentists provide preventive and restorative care, manage dental anxieties, and educate families on supporting lifelong oral hygiene.

Khyber College of Dentistry: A Pioneer in Pediatric Dental Care

Established in 1993 by Prof. Dr. Hasham Khan, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD), Peshawar, began with a single dental unit. By 2003, it had expanded into a dedicated department with five units and became part of the undergraduate curriculum.
In 2013, pediatric dentistry was officially recognized as a separate subject by Khyber Medical University, making KCD the first institution in Pakistan to achieve this milestone. That same year, the postgraduate program DCD Paedodontics was launched, training over 20 specialists who now serve in academic and clinical roles nationwide.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

To meet growing clinical and academic demands, the department moved in 2023 to a purpose-built facility featuring 17 modern dental units on a dedicated floor. This expansion positions KCD to host Pakistan’s first pediatric dentistry training program under the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

Outpatient Department (OPD) Services

Comprehensive dental care for children, including: Routine dental check-ups Preventive treatments (fluoride application, sealants) Restorative procedures (fillings, crowns) Management of dental trauma Space maintainers and interceptive orthodontics Emphasis on patient comfort and a child-friendly environment to reduce anxiety and improve cooperation

Specialized Pediatric Dental Services

Treatment of children with special healthcare needs. Behavior management techniques including non-pharmacological and sedation-based approaches. Collaboration with other departments for multidisciplinary care.

Clinical Training & Research

The department is actively involved in clinical teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Promotes evidence-based practices and research in pediatric oral health.

Institutional-Based Private Practice (IBP)

Offers state-of-the-art quality treatment by highly qualified faculty. Focuses on advanced procedures and personalized care for pediatric patients Available on Monday to Friday, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
